   Hi,

   I may have the opportunity to hire a part time children's ministry staffer to oversee the Preschool and Nursery environments at our church and was wondering if any of you have this at your church. We are in the process of changing some things to become more "Orange" and we are getting ready to start building a new building. This staff person would eventually become full time but right now, we can only offer a part time position. A few questions....

   Have you done this before and would you recommend it?
   What are your hours like for part-time?
   What are their specific duties?
   What does your structure look like in regards to who they would need to report to etc.?

   Any help/insight on this would be greatly appreciated!

   Hi Shannon,

   At our church we have 3 children's ministry staff members
   director - full time (me)
   elementary leader - 15 hours/week
   preschool/nursery leader - 15 hours/week

   both part time leaders direct report to me and then the lead pastor, (plus the leadership team)
   I direct report to the lead pastor (and leadership team)

   There is a certain amount of give when it comes to specific duties depending on the gifts of the person you hire and the gifts of those serving as volunteers. I always write specific job descriptions and inevitably when I look at them a year later I laugh at how things changed for the better.

   I will tell you that by having these 2 fabulous people working with me I am able to plan for the bigger picture of children's ministry.

   Hi Shannon:

   At our church we have two full time employees in Children's Ministry: We have a Director of Children's Ministry and and an Assistant Director. (We do not have responsibility of our preschool or childcare, that is under a different department).

   We also have three other contract employees who coordinate Large Group Worship, Large Group Teaching and our Small Group Activities/Crafts. We pay them a rate per week not per hour. While contract workers are not always ideal, for a growing ministry contract positions are a good way to introduce a position at a lower rate, that can eventually lead into becoming a part time/full time position. (Which two of ours will be at the beginning of the new year.)

   We also have found that when you have one person who concentrate on Elementary and one on Preschool, you can give more attention to each age group and what is best for them.
