I used pony beads and was able to purchase them in packs of 1000 from my local craft store for about $3 a bag. I then bought some jars from Crate and Barrel and it turned out great and didn't take up a lot of room. We are a new church and didn't have a lot of $ to spend and we are in a very small space. I also wanted it to sit out on our check-in table to remind our parents and teachers every Sunday. Here is the finished result
http://www.flickr.com/photos/kirstenschueler/4694068758/
it cost me only about $20!

It is now 4 months since we did the illustration and we still have sooooo many gumballs left! We give them out at each Family Experience night and it surprises me that everyone - kids and parents and staff - are still so excited to get a gumball.

The illustration worked well too and I think I will do something similar just before Kick off Sunday every September.

We designed a large calendar that has all the 2010 months/days on it, and we put 40 yellow dots on Sundays and 3000 dots on all the other days. We're going to print it large (almost 8'x8') and use it as a stage backdrop. Here are the files in case you can use them:

http://www.nickblevins.com/CalendarLarge.zip

I have the original Photoshop (old version) files if anybody needs them.

I am looking at new ways to cast vision to our families so I read through every wall post I could find on the subject. I then took the ones I thought were helpful to me and combined them into this one post. I did not come up with these ideas, I simply compiled other people’s ideas.

This one comes from lisamcc Lisa McCarthy
http://orangeleaders.com/forums/topic.php?id=49

In September we launched a new strategy to help our family's "Create Rhythm" in their daily lives. We call it "Live It, Learn It, Use It."
Here's how it works.
We have a family experience on the first Sunday of each month. At the family experience we launch the new month's virtue. In the launching of the virtue we ask families to accept a mission-which is to "LIve the Virtue, Learn the Verse and Use the Tool."
We encourage families to "Create Rhythm" in their day by highlighting one rhythm time of the day each month and then we create an application tool that ties to that time of day.
For example in September, we highlighted "BedTime" and we created a pillowcase that had all the virtues (for the season) and memory verses printed on it. Lots of GREAT feedback and stories on how families have "accepted" the mission and are literally "Creating Rhythm" in their week (at bedtime) to talk about wisdom and how they have applied it during the day/week!
In October we will be highlighting "MorningTime" and we'll give them a glass cling with the virtue they put on their bathroom mirror along with a marker that writes on glass-so they can "Create Rhythm" and talk about the virtue while they get ready for their day.
In November we will highlight "MealTime" with a placemat. Again to "Create Rhythm" in their day as they accept the mission to "Live the Virtue, Learn the Verse and Use the Tool" and talk about faith while they share a meal.
In December, I'd like to highlight "DriveTime" with some type of CD, with Christmas music.
Then we'll re-highlight each time of a families day through out the season.
Our Small Group Leaders use this language to "Create Rhythm" within in their small group time and as they connect with families.
We hope this idea is a blessing to all of you folks out their moving to His rhythm as we partner with families to raise a revolutionary generation who will Love God, Love People and Serve the World.
We'd love to hear from you-Blessings! Lisa McCarthy

This one comes from Beth
http://orangeleaders.com/forums/topic.php?id=14

First, cast vision for what can happen at home. Fuel passion for their roles as parents, giving them reasons and practical ideas for the value of family time. Next, provide resources as tools and communicate the how and why of each resource (FamilyTimes Virtue Pack, God Time cards, Refrigerator Door cards, Small Talk, For Heaven’s Sake, HomeWork, etc. See the reThink Store for these resources.). You could package a month's worth of tools in a cool way (create a custom printed "toolbox" using a Happy Meal box, paper gift bag, folder, or plastic bag).

Another way to encourage the dialogue is to set up a section of your web site where parents can share ideas on what’s been helpful to them. If your church website doesn't have space or bandwidth for this, you can set up a blog web site through Wordpress, Blogger, Typepad, or any other source.

This one comes from Beth
http://www2.orangeleaders.com/forums/topic.php?id=12

Vision leaks, so it must be done constantly, creatively, and in as many ways as can be done. Here are some ideas that might help:

Launch a new ministry season with Orange Night. Cast vision for why you are doing what you do (the strategy behind Orange) as well as the content you might be covering, but make it fun. You might hand out Orange glow sticks and play some great music. If you want to make it a true family event, try showing the "Skeeples and Lomes" DVD to parents and kids together. Finish off the night with orange sherbert, vanilla ice cream, and orange toppings.
If you do a monthly FX (Family Experience), it’s a great chance to cast vision. Give parents the monthly Parent Link Live parenting podcast to help them understand how they can win at home. Some churches even start the family experience a few minutes early, and while the kids warm up with some songs, parents gather for a few minutes with the senior pastor or another church leader who gives a short (5-7 minute) talk on parenting values or the church’s Orange strategy.
At the end of the year, throw an Ovations event where you celebrate your volunteers. Many of your volunteers are parents, and while you are appreciating their hard work, you have yet another opportunity to remind why what they do is so important.
Create a highlights video of what goes on "back there" so parents can see what it looks and feels like, and play these videos prior to the adult service when appropriate. Work with your church’s senior leadership, lead pastor, and eldership for their communication and support. Talk with your senior pastor about possibly doing an Orange series for adults.
Encourage parents to tap into Amber Sky, where the vision gets reinforced once again through music and creative arts.

This I read from "Learning to Lead : Bringing Out the Best in People" by Smith, Fred and I simplified it. p.34-36

1. Define it specifically. In my view, nothing is properly defined until you write it down.

2. Express it so other people understand it. A good statement of purpose is straightforward. It comes right to the point.

3. Get both organizational and personal acceptance of the vision. Gather Others around the Vision. Organizational acceptance means the majority will vote for the motion.

4. Repeat the purpose over and over. One very effective leader used this phrase in his vision setting: “Say it simply, boldly, and repeat it often.”

I hope this can help someone else.

I've also used the gumball illustration in a church where I had been the children's director. It wasn't too expensive because I purchased the gumballs online through a wholesale company that provides the large gumballs to candy vendors. I think it was OK Manufacturing. Their website is: http://www.gumballs.net/ We got 3000 red ones and bought the minimum number of yellow ones, since we really only needed the 40 (those extra yellow ones were also available to munch on, so none of our 3000 red ones would go missing). We did the similar illustration having our pastor talk about the 40 hours and hold up the small candy jar with the just the 40 yellow gumballs, and then we had some strong guys carry in large glass candy jars filled with the 3000 red ones and they placed them on stage on a table when we discussed the 3000 hours that parents have. Also, we had an extra jar of orange gumballs to show how impactful the red and yellow combined makes. So at the end when we talked about how the red & yellow create orange, another volunteer brought in a large jar with only orange gumballs. After the Sunday morning illustration, to store them, we put them all on the top shelves of our pastor's office, where we also had staff meetings. They were out of reach of little ones, but in view of everyone on staff during each of our staff meetings.

Another church I've been apart of used red and yellow M&Ms as a way to illustrate this, and it was just as effective and maybe even less expensive than the gumballs.

We also needed an inexpensive way (and quick) to demonstrate it so we used Red Hots & Lemon Heads. But everyone thought they were marbles...the candy choice has limited the number of thefts

Our church needed a VERY inexpensive way to illustrate the 40/3000. So, we used Goldfish Crackers in a fishbowl. We put 40 in a small glass and the 3000 in a giant fishbowl. It was a very effective way to talk to our volunteers and we tied it into the scriptures that talk about being "fishers of men". It wasn't very elaborate but it still communicated the message well.

We used the traditional red/yellow gumballs as part of a tag-teamed sermon with me and the pastor. We are trying to figure out a way to display them permanently, but 3,000 gumballs is heavy and they need to be out of reach.

FYI - it has been on display in my office over the last few months, and I decided to count the yellow gumballs...I thought it was looking a little anemic...sure enough, there were only 23 gumballs...now I don't know who's been sneaking gumballs out, but I dread having to count the red ones to verify there are still 3,000!

We recently used tennis balls (during a tennis-themed series)......one of our prop guys poured them out and they flowed down the stage.

We also love the ping-pong ball effect....with the right crowd, you can drop them from the rafters.

We are heading into year 4 with this curriculum and Family Experience. After going to Orange this past year (and the first time for me as director of CM) I decided to recast the Orange vision. First to CM staff, then to the leaders and finally to the parents. I am very very excited to see things unfold this fall and feel really good about recasting Orange.

See, from the get go we practically painted the church orange. We were so excited about Orange and our Pastor and Leadership totally supported it. . We had Orange candies, orange tablecloths, orange balloons and a whole lot of enthusiasm which was contagious in itself apparently.

However, we found out that while parents got the 30/4000 meaning they could define it but they didn't really adopt it. Parents could tell me how red(home) and yellow(church) together make orange but they couldn't tell me why that would mean they needed to do anything differently.

After orange we redefined our "win", we redefined our strategy and then in summer we began to implement it. Can't wait for our first Family Experience of the school year in Oct.!

Love that gumball idea!!!

Loved the orange ping pong ball illustration at Orange too. Loved it so much we came back and used to illustrate a need for summer volunteers. Added up the # of volunteers we needed for summer (we give our regulars the summer off); had one jar filled with that # of ping pong balls and then an empty container. Told everyone that each ping pong ball represented a slot we needed to fill and asked them to take one for everytime they could volunteer, write their name on it, and drop it in the other container. Our summer was fully staffed! Praise God!

At our church we used large gumballs of different colors in large glass jars to represent the 3000 and had one small jar of orange gumballs to represent the 40... our children's pastor held the jar of 40 while he talked about the 5 Things Every Kid Needs in his sermon on Sunday. Then he talked about the importance of the family's role and unveiled the cart behind him with lots and lots of huge jars filled with the same size gumballs. There was an audible gasp from the audience as they realized the significance of those numbers. We kept the jars on display for years... kids have stopped asking for gumballs from the jars now since they have been there so long that they are not only stale but rock hard! ;o)

Beth Nelson on "How do I engage unchurched parents?"

Vision casting is essential when engaging unchurched parents. Help them to see the need met by your ministry by keeping in mind that parents are silently asking you to do three things:

1. Give me the plan.
2. Show me how it works.
3. Tell me what to do today.

God Time cards, Refrigerator Door cards, and other resources included in reThink curriculums will help incorporate parents into the Orange strategy. Family Experience productions are another way to invite unchurched parents into your ministry in a relevant and non-threatening way.

Additionally, at the appropriate time, enlist these parents on the team by explaining, "I partner with you and you partner with me to help develop your child's spiritual life."

You can also incorporate quarterly "one phone call" family social events into your calendar. These are events which are easily set up with only one phone call - hayrides, renting an ice skating rink or bowling alley, etc.

Leaders love to be around other visionary leaders. Encourage your senior leaders to hear from some of the most influential ministry leaders in the country by attending the Orange Conference, Orange Tour, or a Leader’s Forum. We provide these venues for two reasons. First, we want to cast vision and provide detailed information on things Orange. Second, conferences can advance a team like almost no other venue. We’ve all seen what happens to motivation, team dynamics and optimism when teams have a shared experience they can build on. In our Orange gatherings, top leaders talk about leadership at a level that other senior leaders value. Your team can gain clarity of vision, build networks with other senior leaders and gain insight into how a unified strategy would impact your entire organization.

If you are looking for resources you can use in-house, consider working through Think Orange as a leadership team. If you are looking for other Orange resources, the What If and Essence of Orange DVDs can cast vision for your team at home.

Ultimately, though, you as a leader are responsible for casting vision to your team. If you are not the senior pastor or do not lead your department, here are some tips on leading up:

Appreciate your senior leadership team’s responsibility for the entire ministry. If you show you understand how the changes you are proposing will affect the wider organization, you’ll gain credibility in your senior team’s eyes.

Always support your leader publicly, even if you disagree with him or her. Where you disagree, share those thoughts directly behind closed doors. Public loyalty buys you private leverage.

Do your homework. When you present a proposal that is clear, strategic and reasonable, it makes it easier for you and the team to answer the dozens of questions that will inevitably arise.
