I used pony beads and was able to purchase them in packs of 1000 from my local craft store for about $3 a bag. I then bought some jars from Crate and Barrel and it turned out great and didn't take up a lot of room. We are a new church and didn't have a lot of $ to spend and we are in a very small space. I also wanted it to sit out on our check-in table to remind our parents and teachers every Sunday. Here is the finished result
http://www.flickr.com/photos/kirstenschueler/4694068758/
it cost me only about $20!

Crossroads Church is looking for a leader who has a desire to see the church and the family join together to make an impact in the lives of our children and youth. Crossroads began in 2002, and from the beginning we have had a focus on caring for the family which has motivated us to seek a Family Pastor who will deepen this commitment. The Family Pastor is a full-time position. The goal is to create an overall plan for spiritual formation in our children and youth, and to lead and support this ongoing ministry alongside of the family. This is a first step toward a comprehensive structure that will involve training and leading volunteers and also managing full and part-time staff in the future, in order to develop a healthy and vibrant culture in which all children and youth experience life in the presence of Christ.

A full job description can be provided upon request. A degree in the areas of Youth/Children/Family is preferred but not required as this is a key staff position for our community. Please submit resume with references and current picture to Crossroads Church c/o Jeremy Snoberger 710 Sundial Drive Waite Park, MN 56367.

We've used Youth Assistant for a couple years now. You can check it out at youthassistant.com. The main thing I like about it is you can use a hand held or wireless scanner to check in/out. There are bigger and fancier programs out there but this one has met our needs. It's not just for youth ministry but children as well. Don't let the name discourage you.

Wow great ideas Lisa! In light of the whole Friend-Pics application tool from the Family experience, we decided to rent an actual vintage photobooth, calling it our Friendship Photo Booth and encourage the kids to bring friends to take pictures with. We even got our logo and virtue definition printed on the bottoms of the photo strips. I found a local guy here in Dallas. You can check out greatamericanphotobooths.com to get an idea of what they offered. We also used 10 pieces of foam core board to spell out "Friendship" in front of our stage and encouraged the families to bring in photos of them with their friends to display on the board. So by the end of the month we'll have the photos spell out the word.

We're also doing a Bring-A-Friend Contest where we're keeping track of kids who bring new friends each Sunday and tally them on a big piece of foam core board, the"Friend-O-Graph", onstage. At the end of the month, the winner and their best friend will receive a 3 hour pass to Amazing Jake's, which has a video arcade, laser tag, bumper cars, etc.

Hope this helps!

I know there are many programs available that provide a secure check-in for parents and their children. We've been doing the basic numbered name tag thing for years and are looking to upgrade to something that can possibly track attendance, record contact/food allergy info, and makes sign-in/out quick and easy. I would greatly appreciate any recommendations.

Another thought we had originally was to switch weeks 3 & 4 of the reThink curriculum and have the breakfast on the beach week be our DI Friendzy event day. We would treat large group sort of like a "Rocky Horror Picture Show" where the small groups did things as the large group was going on... so when the storyteller was talking about fishing... and the host is fishing behind him/her... small group leaders were handing out gold fish crackers to their small group members... or we would stop and have some small group team competition where each small group had to play a fishing game (magnets on paper fish with a home made fishing rod) and the first team to get five fish in their bucket wins that competition. We would do various activities throughout the large group time that mimicked a Rocky Horror Picture Show feel while creating space for small group teams to compete and/or have fun together. We decided not to go this way, but I thought I'd share it anyway.

We just met today to plan for our Discovery Island Friendzy and I am excited about all that the team came up with. We will also have this event on the last Sunday of the month to wrap up the virtue. Our intent for this day is to have an on-site event for small group leaders to have some designated time to spend with their small group members. We really want to build the idea of team... and small group and just celebrate the friendships that our elementary kids are hopefully making at church. Having said that... we have also advertised it as a great day to bring a friend!

Each small group will be assigned a color over the next two weeks and will come up with a team name with that color in it. We are encouraging the kids to come in dressed and "accesorized" in that color on the 25th. At KidStuf this week, I came out and talked about it at the end wearing a purple shirt, purple glasses, a purple wig, purple bracelets, bandanas, etc... to show them they can go as crazy as they'd like with it. Hence the name... Friend-zy! We are planning to prepare boxes of things to "decorate yourself" for kids that come in for the first time or may have forgotten as well. Our large group leaders and other leaders in the environment will dress in all colors (tye-dyed).

The way we are structuring the day is to have kids come in and join their small group leader to create a team flag. The flag will have a pocket on the back of it to collect puzzle pieces they will receive as they move throughout the day. After the flag decorating, we will move the groups through stations. Each station will have some fun, team building activity. One station will have the kids make friendship bracelets and have their small group team photo taken. They'll be given inexpensive frames to have their small group friends sign so they can take the photo home in it. Other activities are games, etc... that requite team work.

At each station, the team will receive a puzzle piece. At the end of the station time, each group will have time to put their puzzle together and share some food treat as a team. Then we'll move to large group where each group will share what they experienced, show their flag and place their completed puzzle on a large board (backward). Once all of the groups puzzles are up on the main board... it will say the virtue and it's definition. We will end the day with worship b/c we thought the best way to end would be to celebrate the best friend we could ever have-Jesus! Whew... that was a long post. Sorry, just thought I'd fill you in on what we came up with. I'd love to hear what everyone else is planning for this month.

One of our very successful and favorite events is Nerf Warz!! We use the top floor and a million nerf guns with obstacles etc. We charged 3$ for pizza and refreshments. We had it right after church so it was easy for leaders to stay. People still ask for it!!
And the kids and leaders talk about it for weeks afterwards.

Hey,

Our elementary director had a very similar idea, calling it Discovery Island Friendzy (Discovery Island is our K-5 environment name). She met with some volunteers today to brainstorm for it. I'll see if she can share some of that here.

Hey Angela,

I just checked that survey I mentioned and apparently it indicated that in general, 61% of our church's attenders attend weekly, 25% attend 3x/month, and the rest attend 1-2 times/month. That was a survey of the whole church though, and not specific to families with children.

Interestingly enough, only 34% of those "weekly attenders" indicated they serve on a ministry team at our church. And, there was a strong relationship between attendance and serving, meaning the more they attend the more they serve.

Maybe the attendance issue is the place to start?

I hope that helps!

So we have decided to have a "Friend Day" on the last Sunday in April to honor our virtue of friendship this month. We wouldn't normally do something like this because it seems so "old-fashioned" in some ways, however, we want to get the kids excited about bringing their friends to church...... Cuz we all know, when the kids are happy, the parents are happy and more engaged. We even sent a letter to all of our parents asking them if their kids could invite some of their friends to spend the night on the 24th so they could come to church with them on Sunday morning the 25th. I hope I haven't ruffled too many feathers with that one, however we have provided a coupon for some pizza and some activities we think the kids would have a good time doing together the night before. When they come to our church services on Sunday morning we plan on throwing a big party in honor of them and using the games and Bible story provided...... Anyways, I was just curious to see if other people were doing something else in regards to the "friendship virtue". If so, what are you doing? Anyone got any great ideas to share?

We actually have 2 paid staff members for our nursery as well as group of a rotating volunteers to assist them. There are a couple of reasons we decided to go with the paid staff. 1. With that age group, we found that having one consistant person staff the class each week was invaluable considering the greater needs of caregiving requirements. That consistant person knows each child's/family's needs, allergies, feeding & sleeping routines, etc. This is very comforting especially for new parents. 2. We were having difficulty staffing those classes with volunteers. With that age, we can't just stick anyone in there and it is impossible to do what we do with the older children as far as combining classes or getting substitutes.
With this being said, both of the paid staff are plugged into small groups and once per month,we staff it to allow them to join in the Community Worship Service. This may not work for every church, but it has worked well for us. It simply did not work for us to try to staff it with rotating volunteers each week. Hope that helped.

I currently have an "old" message from Andy from Drive about momentum on my mind. One of the things that he mentioned (which is totally intuitive, but one of those things we don't always do) is to create an atmosphere of making things new. In particular this:

To cancel regular programming for a while and then bring it back as "new and improved".

I am thinking of doing this for our Wednesday programming for teens called TheGathering. I want to cancel it for 4 weeks during the end of the summer and bring it back the school gets back in.

My question is this: What things do you do to make it new and improved? Rather than just putting rouge on it with new lights, banners, and rearranging the chairs, and stuff like that. How do you make it something that is fresh? Any ideas?

The fact that they are long time members, but don't attend or connect, should definitely be addressed. Although, that's not positive :)

I can only suggest casting a vision for why you want volunteers, not just in the nursery but throughout children's ministry. It sounds like the church leadership is a little scared to upset some members and that should be settled first. Meaning, the ministerial staff needs to fully support your decision before you take it to anyone else.

They may not be fit for other roles, but you could consider still paying them, and transitioning them to leadership roles, or administration/preparation roles during the week. Meanwhile, you could replace them with volunteers in the nursery.

I've been on staff at my current church for 2 years. When I arrived, I found what I believe to be an oddity. We actually have 2 paid employees that provide care in our nursery. The only up-side to me is that you know the nursery is staffed. But what drives me crazy is the fact these two ladies are never in church, never in a Bible study, and are not growing. I believe we should staff our nursery with parent volunteers but our ministerial staff is no so excited about the idea (some of it is the issue that it's always been this way and the paid workers parents are long time members of the church as well as these 2 ladies depend on the supplemental income). Any ideas how I could present a positive transition from paid to volunteer? Or, does anyone else have this problem at their church? Just wondering...thanks for any suggestions.

Colonial’s senior pastor, Terry Chapman guides a team that is committed to creating relevant environments.

Environments at Colonial are designed with people outside the church in mind. Everything from weekend services, to family ministry, to group environments are designed to be relevant environments that bring people to connect with God, engage in community and make an impact with the world.

Families attending irregularly like that is very common if you're consistently reaching unchurched families. It would be great to survey all the families (maybe the whole church) to find out their background (church/unchurched) and then cross that with their attendance. 60% sounds like a lot though. We have a survey we did last year that was incredibly helpful that I could send to you if you would like. That issue alone would be interesting to explore. I would probably start by figuring out what other healthy, growing churches similar to yours experience with that. I'll see if I can figure out our attendance patterns and let you know.

About preschool....if I'm understanding you correctly, all of your volunteers serve each week now, but you need more volunteers? There's probably other information that would help me brainstorm ideas:

How many services do you have, and are they identical?
Is the normal pattern to serve during 1 service and attend another?
Do teenagers serve?
What percentage of adults/students serve somewhere in the church? (as % of average worship attendance)

Summer is coming up and creating a "summer team" each year has been a huge way to get new volunteers into the fold. Some serve only during the summer, but many stay on board after that.
